Artificial intelligence.
‘Data with AI are power’, providing an explosive interactive side to Science. The genie is out of the bottle, so where next? Continued integration of technology and digital technologies into human development is sure. The predictive capacity of AI and machine learning is growing in its accuracy and reach. Can they become independent of human control? Their application to transhumanism and the bridge between inorganic and organic life is profound. Can we manage these changes & the implications of ‘Big Tech’, surveillance and algorithmic governance, whilst ‘doubling down’ as ethical humans?
The AI revolution and dilemma.
The technologies of the 21st Century are developing a global economic system, communications and social infrastructures that are the stuff of dreams. The internet has facilitated freedom of speech and exchanges of information across the world, hitherto inconceivable. The scale of engagement is without precedent. Social media platforms compete for the attention of billions around the world (e.g. Facebook, 3 billion active monthly users), whilst Large Language Models (e.g. ChatGPT, LLaMa, Claude) are promising revolution for business, education, the Arts and beyond. They are not neutral places or products, all dependent on continual financing.
AI and ethics.
Let’s remember AI is neither artificial nor intelligent. It operates a digested data set, regurgitated with no innate understanding, based on mathematical formulae. Without ethics or conscience, it can produce convincing fabrications and generate its own fabricated sources. Through unintended consequences, the internet risks evolving into a quicksand of deep fake information, half-truths, and clones, to a degree where it is unusable. The authenticity of synthetic media could no longer be trusted or verifiable. Were this to happen, our shared online reality would unravel before our eyes!
Transhumanism.
Where is the future leading us? Transhumanism is a movement that aims to enhance the human condition through science and technology. Transhumanists believe that humans can overcome their limitations and achieve higher levels of longevity, intelligence, and well-being. Transhumanism also explores the ethical and social implications of such radical transformations.
